Rob Thurston, HR Consulting Group
Rob J. Thurston is the President of HR Consulting Group, a top 25 HR/Benefits consulting firm according to Employee Benefit News. He has spoken at more
than 200 conferences on HSAs, Benefits and Human Resources.

Since 1981 he has been heavily involved with human resources and employee
benefits. He designed and implemented some of the first 401k and Section 125
benefits plans in the United States. In 1983 he designed one of the first PC
based administration systems for benefits. He was part of a task force to
implement 401k and new benefits for IBM and was the national Vice President
for James Benefits- the third largest consulting firm in the world. He was
responsible for consulting and implementation of all areas of HR/Benefits
for all 45 offices nationwide.

He has helped create some of the best selling HSA/HRA software, HRIS systems, Section 125, medical claims, Benefits Statements, Voice response, KIOSK, Call Center and now Internet self service software. He has published over 3 books, 4 videos, 20 cassette tapes, and numerous articles in national and international publications.

Bob Ley, NACII 
Robert J. (Bob) Ley, RHU is VP of Accident & Health Sales for the Independent Distribution Platform of AIG American General. In this capacity, he spearheads the sale and marketing initiatives for a new line of supplemental health products, including Critical Illness, through independent producers in multiple profit centers.

Bob has spent his entire professional career, 30+ years, in the Insurance Industry. Following his graduation from Creighton University, Ley joined the Mutual of Omaha Companies in the Small Group Sales Division. In 1978, he joined Wm. M. Mercer, a Marsch & McLennan Co., as Employee Benefits Consultant. He later moved to Central States of Omaha as Regional Director in the Direct Marketing Division before assuming the position of VP of Marketing Services for the Agency Division.

In 1989, he returned to Mutual of Omaha as Vice President and Market Officer, where he was responsible for the design, distribution and profitability of the company’s individual health product line. In 1994, he left the Home Office to become General Manager of the company’s Division Office in Atlanta, Georgia. Returning to the Midwest in 1998, Ley joined National Travelers Life as VP of Worksite Marketing and later assumed leadership of the company’s Individual Division. He is a published author and has spoken at numerous industry meetings on the topic of Critical Illness insurance.

Bob and his family live in the Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Mary currently holds the position of Regional Vice President, Independent Agent Distribution in Protective Life’s Life and Annuity Division. Her primary responsibilities in this role include accountability for the marketing and sales growth of the life and critical illness products through distribution development, sales promotion, training and recruiting.

Mary has been working in the insurance industry for 32 years and has spent the last 24 years with Protective Life including 8 years of service in the flagship regional sales office for Protective. Prior to coming to Protective, she was with Empire General Life and worked in the New England Life and Northwestern Mutual general agencies in Cleveland, Ohio.

She has been a licensed agent with Protective since 1984 and also holds Series 7 and 63 licenses. She is an active member of the National Association for Critical Illness Insurance (NACII) which includes a position on the NACII Board of Directors, Secretary of the NACII Executive Committee and member of the 2005, 2006 and 2007 NACII Conference Planning Committee. She’s also a member of the United Way of Central Alabama Visiting Allocations Committee and a member of Birmingham AIFA. In addition, she has been a speaker at the 2005 3rd Annual NACII Conference, 2005 Society of Actuaries Critical Illness Conference, the 2006 Inter Company Marketing Group Annual Conference, the 2006 LOMA/LIMRA/NACII/SOA Critical Illness Conference and the 2006 6th Annual S2S Conference presented by Life Insurance Selling. She is also scheduled to speak at the 2007 Workplace Benefits Association Annual Meeting.
