Phil McKelvey, President, Voluntary Benefits Specialists, LLC Phil entered the insurance business in 1988 as a Product Manager with Capitol American Life Insurance Company in their Payroll Deduction Division. After holding several different Marketing and Sales roles with Capitol American, Phil left the company in 1997 (after they were purchased by Conseco) to work for Loyal American Life as their Chief Marketing Officer, a position he held until early 2001. After a brief stint working with Transamerica Worksite Marketing, Phil formed Voluntary Benefits Specialists, LLC in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Phil has been President and Owner of VBS since late 2002 and VBS operates primarily in the Midwest states. VBS works thru Employee Benefits brokers to enroll voluntary benefit options to their clients. VBS does product only, core benefit, and benefit communication enrollments to client companies of all sizes. The majority of companies that VBS has worked with fall in the range of 100-1,000 benefit eligible employees.

Erick Piper,
Vice President, Marsh Voluntary Benefits Practice
Erick J. Piper is the Worksite Marketing Director for Marsh Voluntary Benefits. The voluntary benefits division focuses on employee paid –employer endorsed plans in the 5,000+ employee market segment.

Mr. Piper has been in the voluntary benefits market since 1986. The majority of his tenure has been in voluntary benefits with carriers operating in a variety of roles including leading the worksite division for two companies.

Most recently his experience has been on the brokerage and sales side. He co-founded a worksite marketing lead generation firm and has served as vice president of Sales, Marketing and Enrollment for a national enrollment firm.
Tom Koch, Regional Sales Coordinator, Aflac Tom is married to his wife, Wendy, and he is a father of 3 daughters and one son. Tom graduated from University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1992 with a Political Science degree.  He was hired as a probation officer for the state of Nebraska in 1993.  He was employed with the state for six years.  Tom joined AFLAC in April of 1999 as an associate in the state of Nebraska.  After moving to Kansas in August of 1999 as an associate, Tom then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to accept a District Coordinator’s position in January of 2000.  In April of 2001 Tom opened a regional office in southwest Las Vegas, Nevada.  Tom was also nominated to serve on the Marketing Advisory Council. Tom has attained several company management awards. His Region with Aflac produces over $4,000,000.00 in new premium annually. He attained the Aflac FAME award 14 times, the award is for management leaders.  He volunteers his time with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada and AYSO.  

Tom has completed the following continuing education courses:

  • Coordinator’s Accreditation Program
  • Section 125
  • Short Term Disability
  • Dental

Tom’s region consists of 6 district coordinators and 60 career associates.

Tom manages the southwest region in Las Vegas, Nevada including Pahrump, Nevada.
